Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue needs help
It was only a month ago that I lost my youngest cat, Dexter, to a heart attack. He was the third one I have lost in the last year and the most devastating. I decided to try to give back to the rescue community by volunteering to foster cats and kittens. This is how I found the Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue in my area. They are a no-kill shelter that takes preganant moms, moms and kittens, orphaned kittens, feral kittens and other unwanted cats in the area. They also run a trap, spay/neuter and release program for ferals in the area. They do not have a shelter and rely solely on foster homes. A few days after I put in my application to foster, they sent out the alarm that they are going to have to shut down operations before the end of the year unless they can raise enough money to keep operating. I have seen this community be so generous in the past, so I thought I would draw your attention to their plight. You can read about the issues they are having here: http://www.orphankittenrescue.com/blogs/2009/12/article94/And you can donate online here: http://www.orphankittenrescue.com/donate/They also offer other ways to show your support such as sponsorship and their calender sales. In Canada, they are a registered charity, so any donations over $20 will receive a tax receipt. Dexter was a rescue (not with this organization) and it would mean a lot to me to be able to help this wonderful organization. If you can help in these hard times, please do. Dexter thanks you from kitty heaven. Current Mood: grateful |

Mom has a new kitty.
My mother got a call a week or so ago about a 3-year-old Maine coon mix who needed a home. This cat was completely declawed, only lived indoors, and was the beloved pet of a little 90-year-woman who couldn't take care of him anymore. So Mom drove an hour to pick the cat up from the vet's, where it had been living, to deliver it to my great-aunt and her family. Only, while they loved the cat, it was too much work to have a pet with their health/my cousin's schedule/etc. So.. Mom and I picked him up last night and brought him home. He is extremely friendly and loving, and very, very sweet. He's going to need some major TLC - his time at the vet's has left him with matted fur and he feels like he hasn't been eating right. But he ate the treats I gave him last night, and he let me START to brush him (but he was too busy being excited about his new home to hold still). Mom's cats, Bad Boy and Sophie, are mad with a capital P. They're both older (he's at least 11 and she's .. well, we don't know, but we think she's a little older than that). There's been no blood shed, but a lot of hissing, though the new kitty is so gentle in temperment he cowers rather than picks a fight. So, fellow cat-lovers of kittypix, I have a task for you. 1) We need a name for the kitty. Mom read somewhere that cats respond better if the name ends in an "e" sound, but I don't know about that. His name right now is "Allie" (I'm guessing for Alley Cat) but it doesn't really suit this gorgeous fellow. So, suggestions are welcome and much requested. 2) What suggestions can you offer to help Mom integrate the brats? They've already been around each other, obviously, but I know there are ways to help them get used to each other. I'll leave this post public because she doesn't have a Livejournal account of her own, and I want her to be able to see your comments. Anyway, on to the pics! Here he is in Mom's arms after we got him in the house. ( Photo overload under the cut! )Anyway, there he is! Looking forward to all of your suggestions. And I promise - I've got new Ho & Kazander pics for you guys too, but I'll have to put them up this weekend. :) Edited for community name typo, and to correct HTML fail. Second edit: bat60 is my mother. She joined just to be able to talk to you guys. :) Current Mood: cold |

Michael Scott's Solo Spread
MANBEARCAT seems to be the undeniable favorite/crowd-pleaser, but this is a Michael Scott post! It's also a photography question...Black cats, in my experience, are pretty un-photogenic. What are your tips/advice for shooting a black cat? ( That's what she said... ) |

Fort Collins Cat Rescue Journal #36:
ETA: Sorry, my HTML is messed up and I can't fix it. :( Adoptions are ramping up again. The holidays are always crazy, both full of happy adoptions and crazy dumpers, plus everything in between. After the holiday season adoptions will slow down until about March, when spring arrives and "kitten season" starts anew. This next week is expected to be absolutely insane with "Christmas adoptions". For the past few weeks we've had people come in asking if we'd hold cats til Christmas (we do not), so we're expecting a lot of people to wait until next week. Last year they almost adopted out every cat in the shelter. We're well prepared this year with extra adoption counselors on hand. I'm scheduled to be there Sunday and Wednesday. Fingers are crossed that this year we have just as many adoptions (and no returns after the holidays!). :D Since I haven't posted in a little while we've had many adoptions. Most notable is we cleared out all of our Peanuts! Black Peanut, Grey Peanut, and Kitten Peanut all found homes within the last week! Other cats/kittens that have been adopted: Hazel!, Snowflake, Rutgers, Marvin, Penelope, Olive, Oliver, Almondine and Essay (together!), Annie, Lucca, Ole, Buster, Waffles, and Boogaloo has been adopted by our Spay/Neuter clinic as our new clinic cat. :) I'm once again backlogged in photos, so the ones in this entry are from last week, I believe. :) Anybody want a vampire kitten? ;) Keagan decided Ole's neck was tasty! ( More more more! ) |

Minnie & Puss!
These are my kitties, Minnie & Puss. Both were strays, and now both live a very happy and peaceful life with my girlfriend and I. :) Minnie is very curious about the bathtub when I'm in it. Yes, I know it's probably not the safest thing in the world to have my cell phone w/ me in the tub, but I wanted to document her curiousity! ( moar! ) |

New pics of my foster babies ( My fosters )Deacon still likes being under the bed better than not. Ella on the other hand... What a ham! She has decided that I must be okay (especially since I have kitty treats) and she has proceeded to make herself a fixture on my lap/arm/keyboard/head or whatever else she can climb onto. She is very lovable and sweet but obviously needy. Poor girl hasn't had a lot of attention paid to just her for a while and it shows. She is going to be the easy one to get adopted out for sure with that sweet temperament. All I have to do is work on making her less fearful at first so she'll show better. I'm so happy. (What a great Christmas present to myself fostering is. I should have done it years ago.) Current Mood: happy |
